C Greider is at the Cold Springs Harbor research facility on the E. coast. She was involved with Geron in the beginning because she detected telomerase as a student with E Blackburn while at UCSF. Basically, they HAD to include her in the company because her information had already been long since published by the time that Geron was formed. The fact that much of the telomerase information was out in the literature long before GERN patented it could be a real problem for them if they ever have a legal dispute. Personally I feel like this type of research is open to whoever succeeds first in their goals- period.

Then there is the patent information with Southwestern University and the TRAP assay. This is a little more their work for sure, but again there isn't much interest in anybody trying to take this away from them. Some of the scientists who Geron claims are on "their team" keep a low profile because of all of the claims that GERN makes concerning this assay. They don't want to get dragged down if a 'cold-fusion' scenario occurs here. The assay is highly sensitive for detecting telomerase- but it is unquantitative and may be prone to errors based on the fact that the enzymes involved in the PCR step are themselves DNA polymerases. So you see the problem- trying to assay for the inhibition of one enzyme while including a second that might be inhibited by the exact drugs being used in the screen.

All-in-all GERN is making important progress, but unfortunately their PR people make embarrassing claims because thats the way media cheerleaders were raised.

you really did some research into this inorder to ask all these questions- thats good... louis mason
