Unemployment Down, But New Jobs Are Rare
December Numbers Surprise Forecasters

Job growth stalled last month and the unemployment rate fell because hundreds of thousands of people gave up looking for work, the Labor Department reported yesterday.

The report dimmed growing optimism that the economy was expanding so robustly that job growth would come back strong. Instead, the government not only said hiring was flat in December, but it also revised downward previously reported figures that showed four months of modest payroll gains.
