Richard, I saw your post re Exponential Technology. And yes, there has been discussion about the implications for Apple. Most of the discussion is just speculation, as who can tell what will happen in the future.... But for the sake of speculation, consider what might happen if Apple acquires the BeOs and puts it to use with the X704 at 533 MHz! Your Byte article on the X704, along with the Forbes article on the BeOs give cause for reflection.

If this marriage of technologies were to happen, Apple will have set a new standard for an OS and power that wintel couldn't begin to touch. No doubt, such a marriage would cause analysts to seriously re-look at Apple. Apple might, just might, increase market share by recreating a more widely held reputation for technological leadership.
Also, consider the fact that Apple owns 10% of Exponential, and Jean Louis Gassee of Be is a founding investor in Exponential. Seems to me a good partnership! Ditto for the clone makers.
