Box Hill sees Q1 net 50 pct below estimates

NEW YORK, April 14 (Reuters) - Box Hill Systems Corp., a provider of computer storage systems, said Tuesday its first quarter profits would fall well short of Wall Street expectations because of slack sales in January and February.

The company, which went public last September, expected to earn $0.06-0.08 a share on sales of $15.5-16 million in the quarter. Wall Street expected the company to earn $0.14 a share in the quarter, according an April 1 First Call poll of six analysts.

Box Hill said several large customers delayed buying equipment in the beginning of the year to review new technologies and consolidate their MIS infrastructures. It also cited "a slower than anticipated market acceptance" of its Fibre Channel product for the profit shortfall.

"Beginning in March, business...returned to levels equal to or slightly better than expectations," Box Hill said in a statement. "Additionally, in March there was increased interest in Fibre Channel products, particularly from the video and multimedia sectors.

The company's stock, which hit a high of 21 shortly after it went public at 15 in September 1997, closed at 13 Tuesday.
