Robert; There is no need at all for slot one, it can all be done socket and carrier based. True the speeds are getting greater, but those speeds have been handled by mainframes for ten years now and the methods are quite stable.
I can see a motherboard maker with two designs, one for Intel and one for AMD.
Intel is definitely engaging in price firbreaks. If AMD was not there they would make another billion or so, and that is why I say they are cutting prices on AMD targeted items to deny AMD the profits for downstream development. AMD can only make 1M chips this quarter and 2 million in Oct-Dec 97, and if Intel did not cut the price then AMD would make an extra $100 per chip times 2 million = $200 million fourth quarter more profits. To do this Intel has given up at least 2-3 billion in profits. They cannot afford to give AMD room to run, AMD is smarter and more nimble, AMD has in essence caught up, and Intel must crush them somehow.
In 1988 the AMD chips will be faster than Intel, and then we will see how good the socket 1 is?
I can see a major picking up AMD if they get caught down and need $.
