My first thought for the answer to #1 was Turner Valley in 1914, but
it was a site in Waterton Lakes National Park in 1901 called Original Discovery #1. (I wonder how close Canadian 88 is drilling
to the original site?). Source of information The Canadian Encycloedia.
The well had to be abandonned after only a few years production.
It was Turner Valley, 40 kilometers from Calgary that made Calgary
Canada's oil capital. The nearest point on the main railway line,
east, west made a good place for the oil companies to locate their
offices since everything in those days went by rail.
#2 has two answers, Syncrude at Fort McMurray produces 120,000 barrels
of oil per day from the tar sands and oil reserves are estimated at
three times the reserves of Saudi Arabia which makes it the most
prolific oil field. I thought the most porlific well in terms of
flow rate was Hiberia off the Newfoundland Coast.
