The January MacUser magazine has a very interesting article on the Be OS. It was written by Henry Bortman and Jeff Pittelkau. Be sounds very promising, however, there are many issues that would need to be resolved before it would look and behave like the current Mac OS.
Many of the features now found on Windows NT 4.0 are found in the Be system. Preemptive multitasking, protected memory, and a modern virtual memory system are a few of these. Overall, NT and Be are fairly comparable in their feature set. However, there is still no support for many of the features that make the Mac such a terrific system. QuickTime, Macintosh drag and drop, true plug-and-play, and networking would all have to be meshed into the Be OS.
I hope Apple and Be can come to an agreement about using the Be OS as the heart of new Mac OS as long as it doesn't change the nature of the Macintosh Experience.
Macophiles: Also included in the Jan. MacUser is a cool little tract by Guy Kawasaki called "50 Ways to Save the Mac." A bit of a melodramatic title, but still cool.
