I think you are right. I think you will agree that marriage is actually religious rite of the Church. Let us agree that it should be the right of the Churches to agree each Church to it's own policy on who is allowed to be married within the confines of that religion.

Now to all the other stuff.... No Church should have the right to decide on inheritance rights, or income tax rights, or the right to support payments, or pension benefits or any other legal matter that is decided by or provided by any level of Government. So let us decide that all the financial/legal benefits of what is presently legislatively called Marriage be transferred to the new legal Civil Union as of whatever date we determine. Thus every Canadian will in order to attain the present benefits of marriage be required to take out a license of civil union. A divorce will require a dissolution of Civil Union and Marriage can be returned to the Churches to do with as they please, but in order for any marriage to accrue any of the financial benefits presently enjoyed, a License for Civil Union will be required.......
Thus everyone will be equal under the law, and the Churches will still be free to engage in whatever religious rituals they please.....The benefit of this is no one will be able to sue a church to perform a rite of Marriage because it will be what it should be a ritual of a particular faith performed in accordance with that faith, and changing nothing in law.
