Things are further complicated if one would favor married, heterosexual couples in adoption, but would consider an adoption by a gay couple preferable to no adoption at all. Similarly in custody battles: all things being equal, some would choose to favor the straight parent, but, on the other hand, the straight parent may have so many problems that he loses to the gay or lesbian parent. Thus, one is tolerant, but shows lack of acceptance by refusing to treat the matter as indifferent, but judging its importance in context. On "Soap", for example, most of us rooted for Jody Dallas in his custody battle, but that was because he was so nice and the mother was an unstable bitch. If they had both been about as nice, a lot of people would have rooted for the mother......
