That *was* the point.

When an officer of a company talks to the press about major points of company strategy, even if the discussion is largely speculative, there is no distinction between engineering and marketing. Corporations figured that out early in the 20th century when the PR industry was established. The market has to be told in simple, forceful, unambiguous terms what to expect, especially during times of upheaval such as we are currently experiencing.

Regardless of how brilliant a technologist Gingell may be, this article reflects internal confusion and infighting at Sun, and projects that confusion out to customers, the last thing Sun can afford. Sun's relationship to Linux is already in question; that interview did nothing to clarify it, but instead revealed internal dissension over the basic SPARC/Solaris strategy that has sustained Sun for a decade, and which as recently as a few weeks ago McNealy said was not going to change. Competitors will jump on this: HPQ already has--not that it will do any good in their particular case.

The market doesn't need a window into the necessarily chaotic internal decision-making process. It needs a list of products and dates. Unfortunately, this interview provided such a window. IMHO there was no excuse for allowing that discussion to appear in the press. It should have been contained in Sun conference rooms.
