the mouse adapter is real wide and the orientation sends it right across the port for the keyboard!

You could get a mouse or keyboard extension cable and then plug the adapter into it. There are two types of extensions..one for a mouse and one for a keyboard. The connectors are the same but the wiring is different.

Some extensions will work for mouse or keyboard as all of the wires are hooked up.

Can you reduce the size of the adapter enough with a file?

Take back the adapter and treat yourself to a new mouse.
