Michelle Obama Steps Up Policy Role

With her decision to wade into the health care debate, Michelle Obama has signaled that her tenure as first lady will not be spent solely on the sidelines.

Speaking to women's groups at the White House on Friday, the first lady said concern over the country's health care system "wakes her up at night." She described reform as "very much a women's issue" and said the current system is preventing women from obtaining "true equality."

"We all know that women are more likely to work part time or to work in small companies or businesses that don't provide any insurance at all," Obama said. "Women are affected because, as we heard, in many states insurance companies can still discriminate because of gender. And this is shocking to me."
