There are two goals that Kerry/Edwards are accomplishing in the last weeks of the campaign.

The first, obviously, is to convince people to vote for them. But there is a large pool of voters out there who would never in a million years vote for the democratic candidate. The second task is to convince these people not to vote at all.

We can see this happening with Senator Chafee and Andrew Sullivan; no way in hell are they going to vote for the democrat, but they aren't going to vote for Bush, either.

This puts Bush into a situation where in the final weeks he has to desparately attempt to keep his base together, rather than to expand his base.
