FYI -New diamond mine gets
environmental grilling
WebPosted Tue Dec 14 11:47:34 1999 ET

YELLOWKNIFE - The company that hopes to
develop Canada's second diamond mine is
posting the largest environmental security
deposit ever assessed in the North.

Diavik Diamond Mines wants to pay $68
million into the fund. Ottawa wants the
company to post $175 million.

The money is a hedge against possible
environmental pollution claims about 300
kilometres northwest of Yellowknife.

Diavik is going through environmental
hearings.

There are nine groups set to make
presentations during what is supposed to be a
two-day hearing. But by late afternoon on
opening day Monday, only one group had
spoken.

Arthur Pape, legal council for the Dogrib First
Nation, spent more than three hours grilling
Diavik officials.

Diavik's John Wannacott agrees the project
would be the first of its kind and there are
some unknowns.

But Diavik's Tom Hoefer said the uncertainty
is inherent to the world of mining.

"There are areas in our lives where we don't
have the answers for everything, and the way
we deal with those is through management
plans and that's what we expect will come
through the water licensing process," Hoefer
said.

The public hearing is supposed to wrap up
Tuesday evening. But if the level of debate
continues, the hearing will likely need a third
day.
