I myself don't really see DELL making a lot of inroads into that space with the Itanium, but Michael Dell certainly claims to see it. At the same time he's expanding vigorously into handhelds and printers, which areas are a lot more in keeping with his proven core competencies. But plenty of debate surrounds that subject.

My view is that HPQ, who helped invent the original Itanium, is acting like, and intending to become, a tentpole OEM for that chip. If tangential internal struggles cause them to founder in the server business, then while I wouldn't call it a dispositive development, I would call it a problem for Intel.

Edit: and a plus for Sun, depending on what shape Sun is in when it all goes down.
