Inflation may hit magical ‘zero'

Going by the Wholesale Price Index (WPI), which stood at a mere 1.83% for the week ended July 3, there is a real possibility of inflation transforming into the magical ‘zero' mark in late September or early October. Though the decrease in prices is more statistical owing to a big jump in index numbers last year, the trend shows that we could reach zero inflation. Ignoring last year's astronomical rise in vegetable prices, the WPI rose only 4.6 points between July and October and if that level of increase occurs this year, the inflation rate towards October end will be 0.5 per cent.
