>>I can not say that I think MSFT is a great software company (based
on quality, not marketing). I have wasted more time with their
compilers and operating system hangups than I care to recount.

You too? I would like to add assemblers & debuggers to the list.
I gave up after v. 5.1 & called Novell. They recommended using
Lattice C (remember them?) & Intel asm w/Periscope debuggers.
I knew I was in trouble when I wanted to throw my PC through the
window & started cursing Bill Gates aloud at work. I have since
moved to Solaris and never looked back.

MSFT didn't suddenly start writing bad software. They NEVER had
the best software. They prevailed over dozens of PC companies
who had much better products & support. I'm not so certain it
was the marketing alone that did it. Their exclusive licensing
of PC "operating systems" gave them what proved to be an unfair
advantage in the application market. Give credit to IBM for that.

"The Road Ahead"???? Give me a break. As recently as 1988, Gates
didn't recognize the importance of Networks and Multi-tasking
Operating Systems. He thought of office applications with really
neat graphics running one at a time in the desktop PC at a cheap
price was the wave of the future. No wonder they are always playing
catchup.

Enough bashing. SUNW is surging ahead, especially with Enterprise-
wide computers. I predict they will be a 15-20 billion $ company
by 2000.

cheers,
