can just hear the sales pitch..."Forget about the new iPhone and the new Samsung. Here, look at this weird phone with stupid tiles on it. No, none of your apps will work on it but doncha just LOVE the back cover colors? You can change them, for a fee!"

Yep, but if that sales pitch was "forget about the new Samsung, this puppy beats their specs, is cheaper and runs Android so you can transfer all your apps and contacts over and be using it in a heartbeat" I reckon they would have a chance of selling quite a few. Nokia need to set their targets realistically, moving people off iPhone/IOS and the Apple ecosystem is a tough first step. Baby steps first, why not just be the best Android phone?

An Android version would also put pressure on Softy to deliver to quality and on time and give Nokia a second stab at survival at minimal cost, without tying it into a very constrained situation.

I'd have been interested in an 820 on Android. But odds of me moving outside IOS / Android in the next couple of years, just about zero, and Nokia only has a couple of years, they need people who want to move now*. AFAICS W8P offers me nothing significantly extra and a whole lot of extra hassle (and cost in apps). I dont think I'd be alone in looking to stay with one of the two leaders.

* for indeterminate values of "now" given the vagueness about availability :-)
