.NET is should not be launched at this time for the very reasons you mention. Once the bandwidth and other issues are addressed, .NET will become the solution of choice.

My guess is that MSFT will have .NET ready to launch at approximately the correct time based on the technology available at that time. They are pretty good at this. Win 2000 would have run pretty slow on a P66 processor. Haven't you noticed that the MS products seem to match hardware advances step by step?
