Breakneck speeds can cause crashes, which appears to have happened with AMD. What Yousef describes below sounds like a desperation attempt to catch up, which is probably what happened. C'est La Vie.

I would tend to agree with your assessment ... I think a clear
indicator
is that AMD had to "jack up" the supply voltage on their highest
speed
parts. All it would take would be a slight "drift" in the IC process
and
"top speed" bins yields could go to ZERO. I mean, how many
350/366Mhz
systems could they possibly sell ... Not exactly the "sweet spot".
