That's what I wondered when I first saw them. All the others we've had have been loops. But you can wiggle these back and forth, just pull on them individually, and it works fine. Opens the holes.

I think he tied long ones together in the middle hoping Stumpy wouldn't be able to reach them? Or get them caught as much?

I don't know.
