I heard the head of Time's Baghdad bureau on the BBC news today (radio), going on and on about how the native Iraqi resistance had fused with Al Qaeda, how they might have accepted the Iraqi transitional government six months ago, but now they were set on gaining an Islamic state. He sounded so enthusiastic about the organization you'd have thought he was recruiting for them.

I listened and thought - if this were the Iraqi Police talking about how good it was to work with the Americans, you'd be reminding us every ten seconds how they were just saying it for the money. But since it's Al Qaeda, you are certain that these guys - who you acknowledge were far from pious a few months ago, drinking booze and chasing women - are true converts for the duration. You don't mention that they may just possibly be adopting the Islamic line because it has the funding, or that the vast majority of Iraqis, Sunni, Shia or Kurd, want nothing to do with an Islamic state along Wahabbi lines.

I mean, I'm not asking for American propaganda, just a more even spreading of skepticism.
