Jorj,
It is decidedly not compassion at play. Like everything else, it is about power and self interest........and buying votes with promises which can't be kept as the currency.
Most humans and therefore most voters are happy being dependent. It is effortless.
Humans are lazy, for the most part. Indolent. They are happy spending your money to support themselves. People who achieve are a very tiny minority. To justify theft, politicians paint achievers as crooks, thugs, etc., and some, like the banksters, are indeed crooks and thieves. But not all.
Compassionate government is an oxymoron.
The bargain is this: they can sit on their ass, get obese, numb and dumb, but they'll be provided for so long as they vote correctly. For a great many of the lumpen proletariat, it's a great bargain. When you get 'socially enlightened' liberals to promote this Faustian bargain, progress and growth don't stand a chance because the bargain will be struck. The problem is that this bargain is economically unsustainable, as we are now seeing.
Romney's 47% comment was spot on.
Therein lies the problem with democracy. An obese, diabetic, untaxed and uneducated slug with no prospects and no skills but who consumes enormous amounts of public money has the same vote as someone who pays his way. |
