The Costco Anywhere card is a bit of a hustle if you are not careful.

1. It offers 4% cash back on gasoline, yet they figure you will come to Costco to get that. Once you are in the parking lot, you are practically in the store, where a menagerie of seductive products await. It offers 2% back on Costco purchases, 3% on dining, travel and entertainment, and 1% on everything else.

2. They only give you the cash-back once a year, in the form of a certificate they mail. By doing that, they insure you will remain a Costco member (so you can get your cash back) and there is a 20% chance you will lose, throw away, or forget the certificate that is mailed.

3. The cash-back certificate is only good for Costco purchases. They are hoping you use it in the warehouse, where the purchasing power is reduced by 12% by the 18% mark-up on their products.

4. The large incentives lead people to carry balances, which is where the real money is made by Citi.

We use this card only for Costco purchases and gasoline purchases. I will have the cash-back voucher turned into a Costco gift card. We will use that for Costco gasoline when we are there and it is convenient for us They lose.
