Software developers not only had a bigger market for their product in going with Windows, they also had more choices of development tools, more and better documentation, and less bugs in the underlying services they used. I wouldn't waste my time writing software for Apples 5 years ago, and there's even more compelling reasons not to do so now. By the same logic, I won't waste good money on a system which underperforms with less options for more money. This isn't about Intel and Microsoft, it's about the myriad other sources for hardware and software available for PCs, which Apple will never have. The only thing Apple and Microsoft have in common is their hack-it-together-and-see-if-it-works mentality and their toy-computer designs.
Fortunately, Java is coming from the world of workstations where topics like multi-user, multi-threaded, secure, networked environments are the norm. If Apple can establish itself as a player in that market, it will survive. |
