An Appendix Quarter horse? I know what a quarter horse is, I'm not sure about an appendix QH. Is it a cross? Or a line within a breed?

I'm considering half leasing a QH recommended by the place she's taking lessons. He's young, about 6 or 7 years, but calm and has a good mind. Been well trained. (She's taking Hunter/jumper.) About 15.2 hands. The instructors all love him, the other kids that have ridden him love him. Good barn manners. He's a white face chestnut.
