Vounchers, and why they are a very bad idea

For the same reason it is terrible to have government in the religion business, it is good to have it in the education business. Government tends to homogenize, and play as much down the center as possible. This is terrible for religious freedom, but in a country as diverse as ours this is exactly what we need for education.

We are one people with the freedom to be very idiosyncratic. Without schools to unite us, where will our children learn to tolerate the people in whose company they will spend their adult lives?

The fact that liberals and conservatives alike find the public schools annoying, are proof of their success. If they are going to do their jobs no one should find their view totally endorsed by the public school except for the most bland and apathetic individuals. The danger of vouchers is that every special interest group with an us and them attitude will be able to have a school. These schools will be able to be as separatist and prejudiced in their viewpoint as they wish to be. The children in these schools will have no exposure to opinions their parents might find threatening no matter how mainstream those "threatening" opinions might be, and it will be at the taxpayers expense.

While parents should have every right to bring their children up in enclaves where they never meet and idea not sanctioned by the parent, it is not wise for our government to subsidize such a system in a country as radically diverse as our own.
