1. Define yourself or you allow your opponent to define you.

The first, most basic rule of political communications is you must define yourself or your opponent will define you. Mitt Romney lost the communications battle and the presidential race primarily because President Barack Obama’s campaign ruthlessly and relentlessly defined him early and the Romney campaign never recovered.
