ASND is having a very good quarter. The statement in the 10Q is a standard cover-your-butt type of statement. But it is true that Ascend's business is very lumpy. Unlike companies that manufacture consumer products, Ascend relies on a lot of big deals because they are in the telecom infrastructure business. Infrastructure spending is typically cyclical and comes in spurts with every generation of new technology. That is inherent in Ascend's business. The downside is every once in a while you'll get a bad quarter when you've finished shipping your old deals and the new deals are still in process. Or because you have so much revenue dependent on a relatively small number of customers, you'll lose one or two of those big customers and end up with a disappointing quarter. On the other hand every now and then you get a really, really big quarter when several big customers receive shipment. I believe this quarter is one of those really, really big quarters. I believe ASND may surprise massively on the upside in mid-October when earnings are announced. In particular, there are several very large network providers who in the process of upgrading their ATM networks with Ascend switches, and for many the bulk of these upgrades are occuring THIS quarter. Many of these deals have been reported already in the media, but at least one huge deal has not been officially announced, although it's been rumored and talked about by analysts (hint: the customer's name starts with the first letter of the alphabet...). This is the quarter when it will all come together for Ascend.
