Good question. Fred Fahmy answered this question once rather eloquently.

In my humble opinion, AMD should continue to aim for markets where Intel can't or won't cover. The sub-$1000 market is a good example of AMD finding a niche that Intel originally deemed unimportant. But now that Intel has a big battleplan to take back low-end marketshare (and that plan includes more than just price cuts), AMD should be looking for other ways to outmaneuver a large corporation like Intel.

I'll avoid backing up my argument with nitty-gritty details for now. Let me just say that I can think of ways that AMD could have done business better without fighting a virtual trench-war with an Intel war machine.
