The situation which involved Samsung was a hypothetical....however, my underlying point is that currently both the chip supplier AND the handset supplier pay royalties (unless they are the same company).

Second, Qualcomm needs to increase industry compeition for CDMA ASICs if WCDMA assumes global leadership.

I agree....the question that the today's press release raised was weather Qclassic will receive royalties from TXN. I believe they will, but today's PR wasnt very explicit. As a TXN shareholder, I have listened to TXN comment on the patent situation a couple of times. Today's PR sounds almost exactly as how they saw the situation playing out.
