Cisco Announces Deployment of Gigabit Switch Routers in AOL's TeraPOP

Business Wire - August 18, 1998 08:17

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 18, 1998--

Cisco Routers Selected by World's Leading Internet Online Service for High-Speed
Connectivity to the Internet

Cisco Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) today announced that America Online (AOL), the
world's leading Internet online service, has selected the Cisco 12000 series Gigabit Switch
Router (GSR) for deployment throughout AOL's TeraPOP, one of the largest Internet traffic
exchange points in the world.

The Cisco 12000 series GSR increases the speed and scalability of AOL's Internet
backbone, increases dial access aggregation, improves Internet access and connects multiple
AOL sites more efficiently.

"When AOL needed to connect their new data center via multiple OC-12 (622 Mbps) links,
the Cisco 12000 series with packet-over-SONET technology provided the most efficient
engine to complete the job," said Don Listwin, executive vice president of Cisco Systems.

"We are extremely pleased with AOL's decision to deploy Cisco's high-end routing
technology. By deploying the Cisco 12000 series, AOL effectively increases their backbone
bandwidth, delivering faster Internet access and response times to their customers."

"AOL is currently supporting more than 730,000 simultaneous users, more than 18,800 Web
hits per second, and continues to experience explosive growth," said Joe Barrett, AOL's vice
president of Internet Operations. "With the Cisco 12000 gigabit switch router, we found an
excellent solution to position ourselves for continued growth."

AOL deployed the Cisco 12000 GSR to build the TeraPOP, the largest Internet exchange
point in the world, to provide its members with the best and fastest Internet access. Using
packet-over-SONET technology in the Cisco 12000, AOL continues to increase user
capacity and enable quicker response times for all customers.

The Cisco 12000 series enables AOL to have multiple connections and more direct,
high-speed connectivity to Internet service providers (ISPs). AOL is also using the Cisco
12000 for inter-site connectivity between data centers and for access to AOLNet, AOL's
private dial-up network.

This design allows AOL to standardize on packet-over-SONET technology using Cisco
IOS(R) software. Cisco IOS software optimizes the utilization of OC-3 (155 Mbps) through
OC-48 (2.4 Gbps) links and router and management costs, while providing a smooth
migration to higher speeds.

With extensive redundancy and carrier-compliant equipment standards, the Cisco 12000
series is specifically designed to provide the high availability required by high-speed service
provider backbones. The Cisco 12000 GSR provides scalable IP forwarding and services
performance in a carrier-class platform, enabling high-speed IP backbones to scale to
OC-12 (622 Mbps) and OC-48 (2.4 Gbps). Future GSR technology will support OC-192
(9.6 Gbps). The Cisco 12000 series operates scalable and service-rich Cisco IOS software,
providing high-performance queuing and traffic engineering services to support IP quality of
service (QoS) offerings.
