no one is waiting in the wings to buy up these companies and keep them running. Look at the bright side. Right now, there are a ton of highly skilled engineers (etc.) working for companies that are going nowhere. That's a whole lot of "intellectual capital equipment" (to coin a phrase - I think) that the remaining companies can acquire and put to good use.
