Now, when Saddam uses some of those chemical weapons he assured everybody he hasn't got, France can declare they are "shocked, shocked" at having been so deceived, and can sidle even closer to the US, while demanding their share of the post-war contracts.

What a truly sick thought... But quite likely the reality..

Works great if you have no shame, and an opponent who places a high priority on the diplomatic harmonies. However, I believe that M. Chirac has misjudged the Bush administration and the mood of the American public. Quite badly.

The American people will likely have a longer memory than normal with regard to the self-serving behavior of Chirac's government. The only way the rift will be healed will be with his replacement by someone else...

Chirac is just as finished as Saddam is.. Only his own people will do him in...
