Carter was unlucky because The Shah self-destructed on his watch after the CIA put him in power 20 years before and he was a selfish, arrogant elitist leader who treated most of his people like dirt. He was also unlucky because his hostage rescue mission ran into a sandstorm. But otherwise, he was a great president.

At the time, Saddam was another puppet of the US. Yes, we put him in power. Saddam was used to wage war against Khomeini (who Reagan secretly armed in exchange for favors) but when he started losing the war Rumsfeld was sent to fully arm Saddam including, possibly, WMD.

Everything that's happening now has its seeds 30+ years ago. And Saddam had nothing to do with 9-11 and Al Qaida. Two completely different birds. AL Qaida emerged because we created szecret bases in saudi Arabia which the Islamics consider a holy land. Osama may have even been a CIA asset in Afghanistan. Certainly we armed him. So we armed every single boogey man of the Bush-Cheney lexicon. Though the reasons they turned against us are different.
