Exactly correct! The Founding Fathers knew that the country's population would spread south and west and that the number of states would be increased. They also held the opinion that the voting public was not very saavy in terms of political awareness.

Changing the Constitution to a one person - one vote would create a "tryanny of the majority" which the Framers avoided by creating the Electoral College.

Picture this scenario with the one person vote concept: All future Presidents elected by the citizens of the large east and west coast cities plus Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas etc. Now, many democrats would like it since they are well represented in metropolitan areas. The Kansas farmers would not. The Framers, a lot smarter than most of us, decided that we should elect our State representatives by one person- one vote and the States through the Electoral College would elect the Federal Officers, namely the President and Vice President. IMHO, a job and vision well done!
