20-AUG-98 France Telecom SA has offered a couple of clients the chance to test its product for making telephone calls over the Internet in attempt to catch up with other international phone companies, French newspaper La Tribune reported, citing unnamed company sources.
Earlier this year, France Telecom officials had said they were testing such technology, but refused to say when they would turn it into a commercial offer. If France Telecom started offering voice services over its network for high-speed data transmission, it could raise regulatory questions and complaints from competitors over how much it could charge for such calls, the paper said.
France Telecom, like other former European phone monopolies, is depending on growth in mobile phones and new services linked to the Internet to drive future earnings growth following deregulation in the European Union this year.
