You didn't short the stock, you oversold it. You should have selected "sell short" on the trade order form. E-Trade is expecting those shares to be in your account by settlement date to cover your sale. They can buy you in without notice at any time, and might place a trading restriction on your account, as you may have violated the SEC/NYSE rules requiring short sales to be specified in advance and executed only on an uptick.
