Jim, Re: "I think they should include lame encoder"

So do I. And they should include Athlon optimizations, if available. But if you are going to include Lame, you should also include the optimized Canon Encoder, or the Microsoft one that also has Intel optimizations.

"the Athlon holds it's own despite a 600 Mhz disadvantage. A 1.5 palomino will even the score with the 2 GHz P4 and likely do better..."

And did you pay any attention to the Intel investors when they said to wait for the 2.0GHz Pentium 4, when *it* was right around the corner? Of course it's true that individual battles in the war don't amount to much in the end, but the significance of this one is that Intel has proven that, even for a little while, they are still capable of holding the performance crown, despite being denied it for the past couple years.

After AMD releases 1.53+GHz Palominos, Intel will release the 2.2GHz Northwood, and probably beat them again. It will probably continue back and forth, but AMD will not likely have the huge performance lead that they had at the beginning of the year, and it won't be easy for them to continue their market share gains without it.
