Tero,

<< I sure hope your interest is piqued rather than peaked >>

Thank you. <g>

<< The NMT replacement isn't about EU "controlling" Eastern Europe or other Montana militia-type paranoia. It's about which replacement fits into current NMT markets >>

As it should be and I might add ... with the best fit for the future.

Do you know where ETSI is today relative to a GSM-400 standard?

Is the CDMA Westel trial still planned for this fall in Budapest?

I am under the impression that the prototype handsets have already been developed by Tellit(Qualcomm)?

Lucent and Radio Design seem like pretty well qualified partners for the initiative. Supposedly design goals include migrating existing analog 450 networks to CDMA 1xMC 450 networks. If nothing less it is an interesting initiative.

<< There's considerable overlap between NMT and GSM, so consumers will want dualmode handsets that can handle GSM as well as the 400 MHz frequency NMT replacement >>

That is sensible, and fits with the requirements for CDMA 450 as I know them (which is not a lot of knowledge I assure you).

<< Which leaves us exactly where we are with with HDR and cdma2000 >>

Good question, but again in this rapidly evolving wireless data world we should start to know the answers when Qualcomm, IDO, and Hitachi implement the first HDR trial later this year. It would seem to me that we are a ways from general commercial deployment of HDR but Qualcomm's latest roadmap (Bill Bold's) shows HDR & 1xMC entering general commercial deployment at about the same time. I've looked at Qualcomm's publicly published roadmaps for a good number of years and they have been rather accurate. Data in Korea at 14.4 kbps was right on target, as was the IS-95B deployment there. Data in US also right on target as have chip releases.

<< Where are the dualmode phones? >>

Everyone asked that when CDMA was implemented in 800 MHz spectrum, and TDMA the same.

<< Who will make them and will operators trust that they are competitive? >>

Someone will. BAM did not wait for Nokia in dualmode or Verizon for trimode.

BTW: Interesting press release on Nokia & SK Telecom today. Congratulations to Nokia. This is a really exciting initiative. Nokia is certainly "more than your father's" handset maker today (but don't quote me on that to Tero).

Gorilla responses later.

Best.
