The big problem is that it improves Nokia's bargaining position with Q in respect to the licensing negotiations since Q cannot hold out is licensing of CDMA to Nokia as a pressure point.

But if Nokia was losing money on every CDMA phone they sold, how much pressure was there? Maybe I am missing something, but Nokia will still be selling phones as ODM's right? So what is the difference if Nokia brands a pantech phone with a Nokia label or sells a Nokia/Sanyo phone? In both case it owes a royalty on the CDMA handset to Qualcomm. Now I suppose the difference might be that Pantech buys the CDMA chip from Qualcomm and Nokia was involved in buying the chip when it was in a Sanyo/Nokia JV. So we are just talking about the royalties on the chipset being all that changes right? And those royalties have always been pretty small. It is the price of the chipset where Qualcomm makes money on the chipset division not on the licensing.
