<<I'm sure he was a decent enough guy, but I can't see any qualification for national
leadership, short of his name. And that is a pretty dubious qualification, or at least it
ought to be, in a democracy.>>

I read an article in Newsweek recently claiming that American presidential elections were always determined by who had better bloodlines. I don't necessarily agree--Clinton was from trash as far as I can determine--but there may be some genetic component to leadership ability. One of the main qualifications for leadership, by definition, is that people are willing to be led by this person. Certainly the Kennedys were clever, dynamic and charming leaders, who inspired followers whether this makes rational sense or not.

Are there any Americans working their way up in politics who inspire your confidence? I cannot think of any, off hand. There are worse people than John Kennedy, Jr., and still believe that the loss of his potential was quite sad for the nation.

Having said that, what is actually wrong with the thought of Warren Beatty for president? I would prefer him to George W. Bush!
