Greg,

One thing they never talk about in these studies is attrition...

When a person leaves a company or the company is acquired by another, the individual can decide to transfer the 401(k) funds into the new employers 401(k) plan or roll it into a self directed IRA.

With the reductions (layoffs) and mergers, much of the money that was in 401(k) plans moves into IRA's and the employees "new" account is empty at the beginning.
