Ish,

This is amazing to me. I have worked with five over the years in automotive, and like I said they were tops. One dude used to publish notes for the suppliers with their tasks defined, and possible solutions. This was very unusual as the OEM always expected the supplier to do EVERYTHING. I guess I am saying that not only was this guy not lazy, but he had a detailed enough grasp of each part of several suppliers processes to help them do their job. Most in his position would say, "er what do you think we should do....ok I'll approve that".

The one I am friends with is in charge of advanced competitive engineering for one of the top ten interior suppliers. Big company, and he hired in for that job after just being a run-of-the-mill engineer. Trust me, they just don't give those slots away to the first guy through the door. You have to prove you know something to get that kind of position, as future capital expenditure could be based on your work. It can destroy a company to bank on the wrong technical direction, so pick a good horse.

It is possible that because demand is lower in Detroit then the selection process is more difficult.

Last, one of the managers in a large department at Ford is an Indian. He has a reputation for being tough but fair. This is far better than having a reputation for being tough and stupid (and there were a couple of white guys with that designation).

I am surprised, and having never worked with one that I didn't have great respect for I really can't understand how it could be.

HAGO
