>>cynical Attack Politics

There was a time when everybody put their best candidate and their best ideas up and everybody voted. When the vote was over, everybody got back to business, like my dogs do when they compete over a thrown ball. They go like hell to get the ball, but when one of them gets it, they all come back in a straight line.

Now it gets vicious. Check out Sioux Nation, or Don't Blame Me, I Voted For Kerry threads on SI. They won't engage in a meaningful debate like you and I are having. Their tactics are mirrored in the National arena. <<

The Left invented Cynical Attack Politics in the 1960s? That's just silly. There were nasty campaigns long before that. Look up the stories about the congressional race between Helen Gahagan Douglas and Richard Nixon in 1950. Very nasty indeed. Nixon had pink leaflets dropped from the air two days before the vote, saying that H.G.H. was the same color as the paper.

A bit of reference material:

Certainly that was far from the first time such a dirty trick was played in politics.

To say that the current tone of debased debate in this nation is the fault of just one side, is well, insupportable.
