Royal family 'cost 62p per person'

The Queen and the rest of the Royal Family cost the taxpayer 62p per person, Buckingham Palace has revealed.

Royal accountants likened the annual sum - which is up 1p from last year - to the price of a ticket to see one minute of England's forthcoming World Cup clash against Portugal.

Financial figures showed that the total cost of keeping the monarchy in 2005-06 rose by 4.2% to £37.4 million from the previous year.

Aides also disclosed that the Queen needs £1 million more a year from the government to repair her historic palaces, in particular the Mausoleum at Windsor which needs restoration work worth £2 million.

The annual report revealed the total cost of royal travel.

Bills for the monarchy's trips on planes, trains and helicopters rose by £500,000 - a jump of 10% to £5.5 million.

The most expensive journey was made by the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Their charter flights for an official visit to Egypt, Saudi Arabia and India in the spring came to £304,000.

The report also revealed that a reconnaissance trip by Clarence House staff ahead of Charles's tour of America in November cost more than £44,000.

A Clarence House aide insisted: "This was not a normal reconnaissance trip. We needed extra time and extra people."
