Strange how silent this board has become. The events in Zaire grow more interesting by the day.

The rebels now control 1/6th of Zaire and two columns are within 28 miles of Kisengani. Rebel leader " Kabila said Saturday that his battle for Zaire would not stop at Kisangani, a clear reference to his hope to sweep the entire country." Washington Post Service ... 9 Mar '97.

Indeed, the threat now extends beyond Zaire to all of Central Africa.

"In response to international fears that Zaire's conflict could become a regional quagmire, Kablila said Zarian Katangan insurgents who had been based in Angola are fighting on the side of his rebel movement."

"Uganda and Rwanda ... also support Kabila's rebels ...". "The Zaire conflict, which began in October, threatens to destabilize central Africa."
