Bush communications director Karen Hughes said the campaign is not conducting an internal investigation because people who had "legitimate access" to the tapes were very few.
This really is the clincher. Even Ms. Hughes couldn't believe that Gore used a star trek transporter to get the tape and papers. Obviously somebody was there at the Bush camp, why wouldn't they investigate? I understand that the FBI is now treating this as a crime, theft at least, so any lies are criminal in nature. It's not just frat-boy tomfoolery anymore.
