Last I heard, most recently individual trades make up 70% of the trades. This is reflected in several trends. (a) a very big chunk of money is in various index funds; by nature, index funds do not trade (b) by far institutions are invested in the top 50 stocks in the market; so they only trade those 50 stocks (c) over the past 3 months we have had flat to net outflow from the funds, yet the market has fared well; this reflects the recent do-it-yourself attitude of many investors.
