The quote is from an internal (leaked) Microsoft document. One of the their researchers (who is young but pretty qualified and technically savvy) made this conclusion.

While his addressing of the technical aspects (WRT comparisons w/NT, etc.) seems pretty right on, I think he bought into the hype when it comes to Linux's place in the OS market. I do believe there is hope for the OSS (Open Source Software) crowd to make an OS that could be usable for average/above average users that outperforms commercial desktop OS's.

I took that comment with a grain of salt, knowing that from Microsoft's perspective it is the best-of-breed Unix-that-ever-seemed-like-threat-to-us.

My take is that IRIX users would need to have it pried from their cold dead fingers before "bailing" to Linux. Remember, no one has leaked any memos "assessing the threat of Linux" from the SGI camp.<G>
